Computer aided qualitative data analysis software: Overview and areas of application

Abstract:

In the workshop you learn about the kinds of software packages that can be used to assist the process of qualitative data analysis and how this process can be modelled by a software package. As an introduction, you learn about what computers can and can’t do to assist you, what the advantages and shortcomings are, when and for which purposes it makes sense to use a computer package, and what their areas of application are. The larger part of the workshop will be spend on presenting three programs in more detail. These are: The Ethnograph, MAXqda and ATLAS.ti. The three programs were chosen for the following reasons: The Ethnograph is a classic and was the first programme on the market. It is a simple to use package that provides the basic functions. MAXqda is equally straightforward but includes some add-ons that allow the combination of qualitative and quantitative content analysis, shifting the view to a different area of application. ATLAS.ti is the most complex program of the three, offering a variety of ways to ‘play’ with data. In addition to text, also image, audio and video material can be analysed. ATLAS.ti, thus, supplies a third perspective on what can be done with qualitative data material.
