On the Analysis of Qualitative Data: The Big Picture

Abstract:

All sciences have well-developed methods for analyzing qualitative data. Most of the record of human thought and human behavior comprises qualitative data (and most of the record occurs naturally), but the analysis of these data has lagged in the social sciences. This is changing with the development of methods that make the collection and analysis of qualitative data easier. Some methods involve turning qualitative data into numbers and then back into pictures that can be searched for pattern - thus blurring the distinction between qualitative and quantitative data and analysis. This talk lays out the varieties of qualitative data in the social sciences and some of the methods for analyzing those data.
